Post-match reaction from the Bochum win
FC Augsburg put in a matured display on the road at VfL Bochum to secure a big three points in the fight for survival. As a result, head coach Markus Weinzierl “is massively relieved.” Here is the post-match reaction.
Reece Oxford: “Today was a really important game after losing to Hertha last week. We knew that it would be tough to play against this Bochum team. We fought really well and the whole team defended well, not just the defence. That meant that Bochum only had a few chances and we got the decisive goals.”
Michael Gregoritsch: “We knew we could take a big step in the right direction today and we showed that from the first whistle. It was a really disciplined performance by us and we therefore fully deserved the victory. We want to secure our safety as soon as possible, hopefully next week against Köln at home.”
André Hahn: “We were well up for the game and we knew what to expect here. This was a big step towards survival for us. I gambled on something like that happening for my goal, so it’s great that it paid off. We could have done better in one or two situations in the first half and could have had a greater lead. We defended their long balls really well and we deserved to take all three points.”
Markus Weinzierl: “We put our plan into action and got the goals at the right moments. Our defenders kept close together and that made us compact and saw them have few chances. The goal just before half-time to make it 2-0 was great for us. It allowed us to defend with passion, heart and organisation in the second half. We’re really relieved because we’ve now got the points we dropped against Hertha.”
Markus Gellhaus: “We wanted to mathematically secure safety with a win today, but we were too sloppy on the ball and in the final third so we couldn’t cause them any real problems. I can’t fault the team’s effort, however we just lacked a cutting edge today.”
