Weinzierl: "The game could have ended 2-2"

Union match reaction

First Team 11.09.2021, 18:30

Despite numerous chances for both teams, the away fixture against 1. FC Union Berlin finished goalless. “We definitely got lucky in certain situations, but it was the same for Union,” analysed head coach Markus Weinzierl.

Rafał Gikiewicz: “Overall it’s a good point against a team that is tough to play against. We’ll happily take this with us back to Augsburg. On a personal level I still have a positive record against my former club as I haven’t lost against them yet. It’s also nice to keep a clean sheet, but at the end of the day it’s my job to stop the other team from scoring.

Florian Niederlechner: “Both teams had big chances that they didn’t make the most of, so I think a draw is the right result in the end. Of course we would have rather got the three points, and we had the chances to do that. But we’ll move on and try to build on this game. It’s another step in the right direction.

Jeffrey Gouweleeuw: “That was an important point for us, as we had to ride out a few dangerous situations. Overall the point is fine for both teams. For me personally it was hard, of course, to play 90 minutes after a long break, but I felt really good.”

Daniel Caligiuri:
"We knew we’d be able to come away with a result if we threw everything at the game. And you could see that we did that today. We put in a lot of effort, going forward and at the back. The clean sheet was really important today, but we also played well going forward and with a bit of luck we might have won this game 1-0. We need to keep going like this and then take our chances next time out against Gladbach.”

Markus Weinzierl: "This was a good away game for us, we were compact, aggressive and created good chances. The game could have ended 2-2. As a young team playing at this stadium with this atmosphere, you have to get through it, and we did that well. Sure, we got lucky a few times, but do did Union for our chances."

Urs Fischer: "Both teams had good chances to win the game. We tried everything, and were close to that winner, but so were Augsburg, so we are happy with the point."
