Weinzierl: “We made it difficult for ourselves”

Reaction to the game against Bochum

First Team 04.12.2021, 18:53

Despite an improved second-half performance, FCA suffered at 3-2 defeat to VfL Bochum. “We had a chance to completely turn the game around or to even get a point,” commented head coach Markus Weinzierl. Here’s the best of the match reaction against the newly-promoted side.

Niklas Dorsch: “After two good performances in our last two matches, something wasn’t quite right in the first half. We fashioned some good chances, but we went into the break 3-0 down, which was really tough to take. Even though we played brilliantly in the second half, I’m still annoyed and disappointed.”

Daniel Caligiuri: “We shouldn’t have let Bochum into the game so easily. Sometimes you do go a goal down, but then you need to kick on and try to get back into it. Until today we’ve defended set-pieces well, but today we were far too open. It was always going to be tough once it got to 3-0 by half time, but we created a lot of very good chances today and so it could have been possible. Unfortunately, we didn’t do enough to get a point.”

Michael Gregoritsch: “The fact that we’ve lost at home to a team close to us in the league is really tough to take. We definitely didn’t deserve to be three down at half time. Over the course of the game we created some really good chances and could have even won 3-0 ourselves, and there was at least a point in it for us. It’s still quite a tough feeling so soon after the match, but we need to focus on the last three games before Christmas and give it our all so we can pick up as many points as we can.”

Markus Weinzierl: “We made it difficult for ourselves by allowing our opponents a clear advantage. We went 1-0 down to a counter-attack, and that was really annoying. We were a man down for the second goal as Andi Zeqiri was being treated, but then we conceded a third just before the break. It was really tough, but we also defended very poorly. It was also difficult after being forced into two changes before half time. We brought it back somewhat in the second half and showed a good reaction. We gave it our all, and we had a chance to completely turn the game around or to even get a point. But we let some clear-cut chances go begging. We could have scored a third goal towards the end, but we weren’t able to convert.”

Thomas Reis: “We played well in the first half, not allowing Augsburg many chances, and we went into half time 3-0 to the good. At half time, I warned the lads that FCA would attack with real aggression in the next 45 minutes. We didn’t start the second half badly at all, but then conceded from a corner, and that’s when the nerves started to kick in. Huge respect to Augsburg for the way they put us under so much pressure. They tried to turn it around but we also had chances to put it to bed. I think our first-half performance meant that we deserved the win, but we did get a bit lucky in the second. Overall, we’re happy and will enjoy the journey home.”
