Weinzierl: “Disappointed with the result, but happy with the performance”

First Team 02.10.2021, 18:51

After defeat in the previous week, FCA showed a massive improvement in their performance against Borussia Dortmund despite not getting anything from the game. “The intensity which we’re all looking for was there today, so we’re disappointed with the result, but happy with the performance, and we can build on it as well,” said Markus Weinzierl, analysing the game. Here are all the reactions from the game.

Daniel Caligiuri: “We wanted to show a reaction to the Freiburg game, and we did that well. We had a good start to the game, but then we conceded a penalty out of nowhere and were always on the back foot in terms of the scoreline. Nevertheless, we came back and played a decent game, but sadly we didn’t get the points.”

Rafał Gikiewicz: “We know that Dortmund have a lot of quality in their team and you can’t expect any team to stop everything they throw at you. It was a shame that we conceded a penalty so early on and needed to make a comeback. We never gave up, but at the end of the day they scored one more than us. We need to get back on it against Bielefeld after the international break and get the three points.”

Arne Maier: “We played well and put in a solid performance. On sheer determination alone, we earned a point. I don’t know why our second goal didn’t count – nothing was wrong with it for me. Of course, it’s clear that BVB would have some chances, but we defended well in general and played a good game which will give us inspiration for the next few weeks.”

Andi Zeqiri: “Unfortunately we couldn’t get any points, but I’m still happy about scoring my first goal. The second goal was not a foul in my eyes, so there might have been a bit more of a chance, but it was a good performance from us and we’ll carry on working. I want to score more goals and then we’ll win.”

Markus Weinzierl: “It was a good game against a good opponent. The team reacted well after the last game in Freiburg, as well as reacting well to the soft penalty, especially considering we had a lot of injuries late on. The intensity which we’re all looking for was there today, so we’re disappointed with the result, but happy with the performance, and we can build on it as well. We got lucky with a few of BVB’s chances, but not every referee would disallow our second goal.”

Marco Rose: “Augsburg demanded everything from us, and we needed to settle with being dangerous on the counter. We had good momentum after the 1-0, but their equaliser took the wind out of our sails a bit. After our second goal we should have put the game to bed a bit more quickly, but I’m satisfied with our performance, because it was a good and intense performance from both teams.”
