Schmidt: “There was no respite”

First Team 17.08.2019, 23:42
In the game against Dortmund, Augsburg managed to keep up with their opponents in the first half before, shipping four goals in the second. “We simply couldn’t handle their pace,” commented Martin Schmidt. We gathered comments from the players after the game. Daniel Baier: “To be quite frank, we got put to the sword today. It was plain to see what Dortmund are expecting to achieve this season and you have to take that into account when you assess the match. We showed an ability to frustrate them in the first half but we didn’t show up in the second and we couldn’t handle them. If you want to win in Dortmund, you have to execute everything to perfection and we simply didn’t do that after the break.” Rani Khedira: “We started the game off really well and we’re gutted that we couldn’t kick on after taking the lead. We were in the game before half time, but after that, we really lost our way. You have to take into account how good our opponent is though, so we’ll pick our heads up and fully focus our attention on the game against Union.” Reece Oxford: “Dortmund are one of the best teams in the league. After the defeat in the cup and losing to Dortmund here, we have to go into the game against Union thinking our season starts now.” Martin Schmidt: “We conceded right after we took the lead so the euphoria of scoring was quickly wiped out. We were really in the game during the first half and we went into half time at 1-1. After the break we lost all physicality, we lost too many balls far too quickly and there was no respite for us. We simply couldn’t handle their pace and you have to say they scored some vintage Dortmund goals.  They really showed their quality and they earned their victory. We know that we have a lot of work ahead of us and Union Berlin will be the next test.” Lucien Favre: “My team started really quietly and it was 1-0 within 30 seconds. After we quickly made it 1-1 though, we were incredibly dominant and created a lot of chances. We really upped the tempo in the second half and that’s where the goals came from.”
