Home match against Leipzig to take place behind closed doors

After the international break, FC Augsburg return to action by welcoming RasenBallsport Leipzig to the WWK ARENA on Saturday, 17th October (15:30 CEST). Despite having previously sold all 6,000 tickets made available, the match must now take place behind closed doors due to the rising number of coronavirus cases. Augsburg’s seven-day average infection rate rose to 49.3 over the weekend and the city’s authorities have now informed FCA that the match must take place without spectators.

“It’s a shame that we can’t have this match, in which first meets second in the table, in front of fans. Obviously we would have preferred to have the support of 6,000 of our fans, as we did for the home match against Borussia Dortmund, but we accept the city’s decision based on the rising number of cases. We hope that the rate of infection does not continue trending upwards. When discussing the return to behind-closed-doors matches, though, it must be considered that Bundesliga fixtures are open-air events and that we have worked hard to create a thorough hygiene concept with the necessary safety precautions in place. The Bundesliga has shown over the last few weeks that our matches are safe for spectators. We therefore hope that the discussion over fans’ attendance, which can be emotional at times, will be led more objectively in the future,” said Michael Ströll, business director for FC Augsburg.

No fans allowed at academy matches

Due to the rising infection rate, FC Augsburg U23’s match in the Bavarian Regionalliga will also take place behind closed doors. The same goes for all matches for FCA youth sides. The U23 team, coached by Josef Steinberger, play their first home match since March on Friday, 16th October (19:00 CEST), facing TSV Aubstadt at the Rosenaustadion.
