Herrlich: "It was an important step"

Reaction to the win in Mainz

First Team 28.02.2021, 18:50

After an intense battle, Augsburg were able to celebrate three crucial points away to Mainz. The Fuggerstädter prevailed 1-0 thanks to André Hahn’s goal. We bring you the pick of the match reaction.

Florian Niederlechner: “It was a real fight from the first minute to the last. Credit to the whole team, but especially our centre-backs who defended everything. It was a really bad pitch, but we are unbelievably happy with the three points. We earned this win.”

Daniel Caligiuri: “We knew from the start that it would be all about the fight and that Mainz would play a ton of long balls. But we battled well and were strong in the challenges. We’ll gratefully take the goal at the end of the day. It will do us a lot of good as a team.”

André Hahn: “It wasn’t about playing pretty football today, we just wanted to get the points. That was the worst pitch I’ve ever played on in the Bundesliga. We knew right from the warm-up what today was about – fighting, battling and jumping into the challenges. We did that successfully and we are really happy about that. I think the fans will be, too.”

Rani Khedira: “There was pure joy when the referee blew the final whistle and we knew that we’d seen the game out. We nearly got there last week and today we managed to defend well for the whole 90 minutes. The goal was a gift, of course, but we provoked the mistake with our pressing.”

Heiko Herrlich: “Both teams fought with passion and it was clear that whoever went in front would have it easier. Luckily that was us. Mainz played a lot of long balls, as we expected, but we defended them well. We are over the moon to have got our reward for such a focused team performance. It was an important step as we have managed to increase the gap over a direct rival who have been flush with confidence in recent weeks.”

Bo Svensson (Mainz): “It was a difficult match. We played OK in the first half but without creating anything in front of goal. Augsburg defended passionately and the individual mistake obviously played right into their hands. They could have made it 2-0 at the end but we had chances of our own as well. A draw would have been fair, I think."
