Gouweleeuw: “We can take a huge step towards safety”

The captain speaks ahead of Saturday’s game

First Team 16.04.2022, 08:58

Jeffrey Gouweleeuw scored his second goal of the season in the 2-1 win over Mainz just under a fortnight ago. Ahead of the upcoming home game against Hertha, the captain spoke about the three away games in six days, the return of the fans and Saturday’s clash.

Jeff, we’ve have picked up six points from our last three games and have made up some good ground in the league table. How would you sum up these matches?

They were obviously very important. We had two home games against Wolfsburg and Mainz and we knew that we had to pick up some points. We went into the derby against Bayern with lots of confidence and we played well against them. It was an unfortunate handball that led to their penalty.

It was the first time in well over a year that we won two games in a row. Do you think about these kind of statistics as a player?
No, I don’t concern myself with them. I only think about the here and now. The main thing is that we’re on a bit of a run at home and it has given us some breathing space in the league table. We need to maintain this gap for the rest of the season.

“The fans give us that extra push.”

Fans are now back in the stadium and it seems that they are spurring you on…
One hundred percent. There is a huge difference between playing in an empty stadium and playing in front of a full house. We are all aware of the backing of the fans. They give us that extra push.

Attention now turns to the big game against Hertha. How will you go about it?
I think we have to perform like we did against Mainz and Wolfsburg. We know that we can take a huge step towards safety and we are still full of confidence from the last few games. I hope that the stadium will be sold-out because if we give it everything and the terraces are rocking, I am sure that we will come away with the win.
