FCA lose 2-1 to SC Freiburg

Gregoritsch scored the equaliser

First Team 19.02.2022, 17:27

FC Augsburg suffered a narrow 2-1 defeat at the hands of SC Freiburg. After falling behind early, the Fuggerstädter responded, but after retaking the lead, the visitors held on to take the three points.

The coaching staff made one change to the team that faced Gladbach last time out, with Carlos Gruezo replacing Jan Moràvek, who started on the bench.

The game got off to the worst possible start for FCA, who fell behind after just four minutes. Roland Sallai’s cross from the right-hand side was met by Nils Petersen who nodded home from inside the six-yard box. Freiburg kept up the pressure and nearly extended their lead through a free-kick from former Augsburg player Jonathan Schmid in the 7th minute. Just 60 seconds later, goalkeeper Rafał Gikiewicz denied Freiburg’s number 29, Woo-Yeong Jeong.

Gregoritsch equalises before Schlotterbeck makes it 2-1

Afterwards, FCA eventually found their way into the contest and started to carve out some chances of their own. Michael Gregoritsch’s header in 10th minute flew over the bar and Ruben Vargas’ effort in the 13th minute was deflected wide. After Florian Niederlechner’s effort found the side netting after a quarter of an hour, FCA soon managed to get back on level terms. Niederlechner found Gregoritsch and the Austrian found the bottom corner with a low shot from outside the area, the sixth time he has netted this term.

Augsburg however failed to push on after finding the equaliser and it was the away side who took the initiative. After Gikiewicz denied Jeong again in the 25th minute, the goalkeeper was beaten just moments later. FCA failed to clear their lines after a Freiburg free kick and Nico Schlotterbeck was in the right place at the right time to bundle the ball over the line, making it 2-1. Augsburg could only manage a few shots from distance in response to falling behind again.

Gregoritsch and Finnbogason miss chances to level it

After the break, the home side continued to struggle to put the Breisgauer under any pressure and despite playing some better football than in the first 45 minutes, they lacked the cutting edge in the final third and the away team proved to be the more creative side. Jeong failed to convert after finding himself in a promising position in the 57th minute and put another opportunity wide just 60 seconds later. FCA were lucky not to fall behind in the 64th minute when Höfler put the ball over from close range.

The Fuggerstädter continued to push, but couldn’t create anything dangerous again until the final 15 minutes. Gregoritsch narrowly headed wide from a Vargas cross (78’). The best chance to equalise then came in added time. Substitute Alfred Finnbogason was in behind, however he couldn’t get his shot on target (90’).

As a result, FCA ended up losing 2-1. Up next is another home game, this time against Borussia Dortmund on Sunday, 27th February (17:30 CET).
