Caligiuri: “We’ve fulfilled our duty”

First Team 12.09.2020, 18:40

FC Augsburg advanced to the second round of the DFB-Pokal with a 7-0 victory over MTV Eintracht Celle. “We were hungry right until the end and never let off,” is how head coach Heiko Herrlich summed up the game. Read all the post-match reaction to FCA’s victory against today’s fifth-tier opponents.

Daniel Caligiuri: “We needed some time to get going, but we found our footing after it was 1-0. We’ve advanced to the next round and have fulfilled our duty. It was a really good test before the league gets back underway, which is what we’re fully focused on now. I think you saw today how at ease I feel within the team and that I’ve received a warm welcome here.”

Florian Niederlechner: “We were very professional today. Celle were able to hold their own, especially during the opening stages of the match. It was definitely a benefit that we were playing at home. It made it a bit different from a typical cup game. We’ve passed our first hurdle of the season and have reached the second round. Now, we want to get off to  strong start in the league as well. We’re preparing ourselves for a tough game against Union.”

Tobias Strobl: “We made things difficult for ourselves in the beginning, because Celle lined up very deep and were giving it their all. But, we kept getting better and scoring. In the end, it was an easy afternoon. I’m looking forward to my first game for FCA and hope that the fans will soon be able to return. Starting our league campaign against Union means we will be up against a completely different opponent. We know what their strengths are, but will still try to play our game.”

Heiko Herrlich: “You see it again and again how smaller teams can cause problems for the favourites. We took the match seriously and scored seven goals. First, you have to manage to create those kinds of chances against a highly-motivated opponent. If you analyse the game again, you’re certain to see things that can still be improved on. We had those two moments where we had to play it square in front of our goal. But, we were hungry until the end and never let off.”

MTV head coach Hilger Wirtz von Elmendorff: “Today was a great experience for us. It was a fair game with a well-deserved winner, there’s nothing to debate there. We wanted to keep our shape for the majority of the game, which we struggled to do. We had a couple chances to score, but failed to take them. A 5-0 defeat would have been a great result for us.”
