Gregoritsch knocked out – Koubek through to quarterfinals

Córdova and Venezuela eliminated

Tomàš Koubek and the Czech Republic advanced to the quarterfinals of the UEFA EURO 2020 on Sunday, while Michael Gregoritsch and Austria were knocked out after a narrow defeat on Saturday. Meanwhile, Sergio Córdova and Venezuela have been eliminated from the Copa América. 

The Czech Republic advanced to the quarterfinals following a 2-0 upset win over the Netherlands. After Matthijs de Ligt was shown a red card in the 55th minute, the Czechs were able to dominate the second half. Tomáš Holeš headed home the opener (68’), before Patrik Schick made it 2-0 in the 80th minute. Koubek was an unused substitute in the match. Next up, the Czech Republic will face Denmark in Baku on Saturday (3rd July, 18:00 CEST). 

Michael Gregoritsch and Austria have been eliminated from the EUROs after a hard-fought 2-1 defeat to Italy. After a goalless 90 minutes, the match went to extra time. Federico Chiesa (95’) and Matteo Pessina (105’) put Italy ahead, with Stuttgart’s Sasa Kalajdzic getting one back late for Austria (114’). Gregoritsch was subbed on in the second half of extra time, narrowly missing the target just minutes after coming on. 

1-0 loss to Peru for Córdova and Venezuela

Sergio Córdova and Venezuela bowed out of the Copa América with a 1-0 loss to Peru in their final group stage game. Andre Carillo scored the lone goal of the match just after the break (48’). After being subbed on in all three previous group stage games, Córdova made his first start of the tournament, but was unable to prevent the defeat. Venezuela have been eliminated from the Copa América after finishing last in their group with two points from four games.
