FCA narrowly defeated 2-1 in Dortmund

Zeqiri equalises but BVB come away as winners

First Team 02.10.2021, 17:30

FC Augsburg were narrowly defeated 2-1 against Borussia Dortmund. FCA gave a good account of themselves despite having several players missing and came back from going behind early on, but in the end the team goes home empty-handed.

Head coach Markus Weinzierl made five changes to the team that suffered a 3-0 defeat to SC Freiburg. Tobias Strobl, Carlos Gruezo, Arne Maier, Andi Zeqiri and Sergio Córdova came in for Niklas Dorsch, André Hahn (both ill), Ruben Vargas (fever), Raphael Framberger and Florian Niederlechner (both named on the bench).

Despite the various absent players, FCA started the game positively, and Daniel Caligiuri had an early shot on goal (3’). At the other end of the pitch, referee Tobias Welz pointed to the spot after Jeffrey Gouweleeuw stood on Donyell Malen’s foot in the penalty area, and Raphael Guerreiro converted the penalty to make it 1-0 to BVB (10’). After scoring the opening goal, BVB began to control the game with more ball possession, but FCA kept fighting and stayed concentrated, not allowing their hosts any more opportunities.

Precision was somewhat lacking from Augsburg’s last game, but just after the half-an-hour mark FCA showed how cool they can be in front of goal. After Maier’s long-range effort clattered the crossbar, the ball fell to Zeqiri and he turned the ball home for 1-1 (35’).

Brandt makes it 2-1, Zeqiri’s goal is ruled out

The second half started poorly for Augsburg, as Marco Reus played it to Julian Brandt on the counter attack. His low shot sailed into the Augsburg net to put Dortmund 2-1 in front (51’). FCA almost got an immediate response, but referee Welz saw a foul committed in the build-up to Zeqiri’s goal and so ruled it out (52’).

This unfortunate incident was soon followed by some good luck for Augsburg. Rafał Gikiewicz initially saved Marius Wolf’s effort, but the ball fell into the path of Marco Reus, but he somehow managed to put it over the bar (57’). FCA continued their search for another equaliser, and Mads Pedersen had an attempt on Gregor Kobel’s goal, but it was off target (58’).

Hazard and Reus fail to put the game to bed

FC Augsburg had stepped up their defensive line considerably, which gave BVB more and more space in behind. During a Dortmund counter attack, Thorgan Hazard struck the post when free on goal (67’) before Reus fired just over from what was a promising opportunity (70’). The end to the game was rather hectic, as Dortmund looked to put the game to bed but Augsburg were seeking the equaliser, but neither team got any clear-cut chances, and the game ended 2-1.

And so, FCA were defeated despite a brave performance. Their next game comes after the international break on Sunday 17th October (17:30 CEST) where they will host Arminia Bielefeld.
